84.5%B

3 categories with scores.

Where the 84.5% comes from

  • Homework: 95% × 20% = 19
  • Quizzes: 85% × 30% = 25.5
  • Tests: 80% × 50% = 40

To finish with 85%, you need 87% on the final.

A90%Out of reach (112%)
B80%62%
C70%12%
D60%Already safe

The final counts for 20% and everything else for 80%.

How a weighted grade is worked out

Each category gets a percentage of its own, then counts towards the course according to its weight. With homework at 95% weighted 20%, quizzes at 85% weighted 30% and tests at 80% weighted 50%, the grade is 95 × 0.20 + 85 × 0.30 + 80 × 0.50 = 84.5%.

Type scores as points (18/20, 7 out of 10) or percentages (92% or just 92), separated by commas. Add up the points divides all the points earned by all the points possible, as most gradebooks do; Average the percentages gives every assignment the same say. A category with no scores yet is left out and the others are scaled up to fill its weight, so mid-term grades still make sense. Weights do not have to add up to 100: they are used as proportions.

What you need on the final

If the final is worth w of the course and your grade on everything else is c, the course grade will be c × (1 − w) + final × w. Turning that round gives the score you need: (target − c × (1 − w)) ÷ w. The table lists the score needed for each letter grade. A result above 100% means the target is out of reach without extra credit; zero or less means it is already safe.

Questions

My school's portal shows a different grade. Why?

Check how it treats categories: some systems average percentages instead of adding points, drop the lowest score, or count missing work as zero. This calculator leaves empty categories out rather than counting them as zero.

Should the final be one of my categories?

No. Enter the final's weight in the final exam box and leave it out of the categories; the calculator scales the other categories to fill the rest of the course.

Is anything I type stored?

Your categories and scores are saved in this browser's local storage so they are there next time. They never leave your device.
