Building a rubric

  1. Choose a starting point. Pick a template (persuasive writing, oral presentation, science investigation, group project) and press Load, or start from the blank grid. Undo brings back what you had.
  2. Name the criteria and levels. Each row is something you assess; each column is a level of performance. Arrow buttons reorder them and the cross removes one. You can have up to 12 criteria and 6 levels.
  3. Describe each level. Write what the work looks like at that level, in words a student can check their own work against.
  4. Set the points. Points belong to the level; the weight multiplies them for one criterion, so a weight of 2 makes evidence count double. The total updates as you type.

Printing, sharing and scoring

Print lays the rubric out across a landscape page with space for a name, date and score. Copy table puts it on the clipboard as a formatted table for documents, with a tab-separated copy that spreadsheets turn into cells. CSV downloads a file for a spreadsheet or learning platform, and Copy Markdown suits wikis and notes.

The scoring panel lets you pick a level for each criterion while marking: it adds up the points and shows the percentage. Nothing about the students you mark is kept.

Questions

What makes a good rubric descriptor?

Describe what you can see in the work rather than a feeling about it: three reasons, each backed by evidence is easier to apply than very good reasons. Keep the levels parallel, changing one quality at a time from column to column.

How many levels should a rubric have?

Three to five is common. Four levels avoid a middle option that everything drifts towards; three are quicker to use with younger students.
