# Name picker wheel

Type your class onto the wheel and spin. Every name has the same chance, picked names can come off the wheel so everyone gets a turn, and there is a no-spin mode for anyone who finds motion uncomfortable.

## Using the wheel in class

Type or paste names onto the wheel, one per line, or reuse the class you saved in the [seating chart maker](https://sproutassembly.sbs/). Press **Spin** or the `S` key. The wheel speeds off, slows down and stops with one name under the red pointer, which is announced to screen readers as well as shown in large type.

With *Take picked names off the wheel* on, each student comes off the wheel after their turn and goes into the *Picked so far* list, so nobody is chosen twice until everyone has had a go. Press **Put picked names back** to start a new round. Turn the option off if you want every spin to be a fresh draw from the whole class.

## Fair, quiet and calm options

The name is chosen first, using your browser's cryptographic random number generator, and the wheel is then turned to land on it, so the animation never changes the odds: with 25 names, each has a 1 in 25 chance. Sound is off until you turn it on. *No spinning* picks instantly without movement, and the wheel also skips the spin automatically if your device is set to reduce motion. Full screen makes the wheel and the chosen name fill a projector or interactive whiteboard.

## Questions

**Can the same name come up twice?**

Only if you turn off *Take picked names off the wheel* or put the picked names back. Typing a name twice gives it two segments and twice the chance, which is handy for team names but easy to do by accident.

**How many names fit?**

Up to 200. Beyond about 40, labels get very small on a phone, but the picked name is always shown in full beside the wheel.

**Are the names saved?**

The list on the wheel and the picked list are kept in this browser's local storage so they survive a page refresh. They are not sent anywhere. Use *Clear saved names* to remove them.
