# Seating chart maker

Paste your class list, choose a room layout and shuffle. Add keep-apart and front-row rules, swap seats by dragging or tapping, then print the plan for the door.

## How to make a seating chart

1. **Add your class.** Type or paste names, one per line. A column copied from a spreadsheet or register works; numbering and bullets are tidied away.
2. **Pick a layout.** Rows of single desks, pairs of desks, group tables, or a U-shape (horseshoe) with the open end facing the board. Set how many desks, rows, tables or seats you have, and the counter shows whether everyone fits.
3. **Add rules if you need them.** Under *Keep apart*, put students who should not sit together on one line; under *Near the front*, list anyone who needs to be close to the board.
4. **Shuffle, then adjust.** Drag a name onto another seat to swap the two, or press one seat and then another (this works with a keyboard, a switch or a touch screen). Print the plan or copy it as a list.

## How the rules work

Keep apart means not side by side, not directly in front or behind, not diagonally touching and never at the same desk or table. Shuffle places front-row students first, fills the rest at random from the front, so spare seats are left at the back, then swaps students until every keep-apart group is separated. If the room is too tight to satisfy everything, the plan shows which rules are still broken and outlines those seats, and moving someone by hand rechecks the rules straight away.

Changing a name in the list keeps everyone else where they are. Changing the layout starts a fresh plan.

## More classroom tools

Every tool has its own page, works on the board, a laptop or a phone, and keeps working offline once loaded.

## Questions

**Is my class list uploaded anywhere?**

No. The names, rules and plan stay in this browser's local storage on this device, and nothing is sent to a server. Use *Forget this class* to remove them, for example on a shared computer.

**Can I see the plan the way I see the room?**

Yes. Turn on *Teacher's view* to put the front of the room at the bottom, as it looks from your desk. Printing uses whichever view is on screen.

**How do I make a plan for two different classes?**

The tool keeps one class at a time. Print or download each plan as a CSV file, then paste in the next class list.
